” CAN YOU HEAR IT? ” – Randy Brook – Original Song From The Takoma Records Album “One More Highway”

Saturday, June 26th, 2010

(Click THIS SENTENCE, or “MORE INFO” for song notes and LYRICS) — This is the final song on my Takoma Records debut album “One More Highway” (produced by John Fahey). Elsewhere on my You Tube channel ( http://www.youtube.com/user/randybrook77 )there are other songs from the album, and in the notes accompanying those songs I have already told about the album and how it came to be. Several of the fotos are from a 6-page Life Magazine article about my hitch-hiking exploits which was published shortly before the album was recorded.
-
This song called for a choir on the last verse, so we just gathered up everyone who was hanging around the sessions, including the sound engineer and his wife, and threw them all in front of a microphone. I was amazed at how well their performance turned out. They sound like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or something.
-
True story – during recording I was thinking how nice a country-style slide guitar lead would sound. I went outside during a break and there was a guy sitting on the sidewalk playing a slide dobro (it was Hollywood, after all). I asked him to come in, and we gave him a few bucks to play on the recording. I think his music MAKES the song. Sadly, I lost his name and when it came time for credits I had to just call him “The Phantom Slide-Dobro Player”.
-
I have no idea why i used the gospel-standard “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” at the end, or why I jokingly said “Take it, Jesus” right before the verse began. At the time I did not believe in God, Jesus or the Bible – in fact I was an agnostic. A long time later I had some personal revelations – not unlike some of the imagery towards the end of the video – and they completely turned me around. Now I believe, but at the time I didn’t. Maybe the whole inspiration for the song was given to me by the God and His Son who I later came to embrace. Life is funny that way (No pun intended).
-
I’m not saying if that was Jesus or not who said “Easy” right after I said “Take it Jesus”, but if it was he has a better sense of humor than I gave him credit for. (Get it? “Take it , Jesus” – “Easy” – “Take it…easy”? Get it? Get it? SIgh…never mind.)
-
With this song I have now finished posting what I consider to be the best songs from the album, so there’s really no need for you to go out and buy it (I know…I know…it’s a good thing I told you…you were just about to rush out the door to go get a copy, right?). I have done myself out of any future sales royalties (It’s ok, I’m used to it. I never got a dime from all the previous sales anyway. Look up “chump” in the dictionary…you’ll see my picture next to it. Oh well…”That’s show biz”).

CAN YOU HEAR IT?
—————————-
Can you hear it?
Can you see it?
Do you know it to be real?
Can you touch it?
Can you taste it?
C’mon and tell me how you feel.
-
When the morning sun is breaking,
And a new day is coming in,
Lift your head, leave your sleeping,
Let me tell you where I’ve been.
-
To the valley,
Wet with wonder,
Watched a rolling river run.
You have been there,
In a vision,
Sitting golden in the sun.
-
BRIDGE – Well, I’ve been
Searching such a lonely time,
Please won’t you tell me?
-
Other faces,
Other places,
Know a softer side of you.
Can the ones,
Who touch you now,
Ever know what you’ve been through?
-
Leaving madness,
Mournful sadness,
Broken beauty – now unmasked,
Let the stillness,
Make its answer,
For the questions you have asked.
-
BRIDGE
-
Will the circle,
Be unbroken,
By and by, Lord, by and by.
There’s a better,
Home a’waitin’
In the sky, Lord, in the sky.

LYRICS:

LOOK AT ME
(verse 1)
have you ever noticed
all she ever did to you
was take my heart and put it aside
just for her to get to you

i’m givin you everything
just to let out what i feel
but everytime i happen to do so
hurts my heart, when you ask if it’s real

(bridge)
what is it she done to you
why she gotta break my love when it’s true.
takin everything i had to offer
just had to be the first, your lover

boy i wanna take you out all tonight
show you everything and hold you so tight
be the one to take a lasting stand
baby boy just hold my hand

(chorus)
look, at me. and see
tell me that this isn’t the face to ever lie
what, i feel. is real.
don’t ever make me turn to say good bye

i can’t ever just let you go
with anyone else, or by yourself no.
i wanna be right by your side
to keep you warm all day & night

even though
i may not understand
but baby boy i know
i’ll be better than, her.

(verse 2)
baby boy i understand your side
worried about the things you have to do
now may not just be the time
when i say i wanna be with you

for everytime you’re out there
i know you wonder about me
anytime i ain’t close to you
just know my heart, you’ve got the key

(bridge)
what is it she done to you
why she gotta break my love when it’s true.
takin everything i had to offer
just had to be the first, your lover

boy i wanna take you out all tonight
show you everything and hold you so tight
be the one to take a lasting stand
baby boy just hold my hand

(chorus)
look, at me. and see
tell me that this isn’t the face to ever lie
what, i feel. is real.
don’t ever make me turn to say good bye

i can’t ever just let you go
with anyone else, or by yourself no.
i wanna be right by your side
to keep you warm all day & night

even though
i may not understand
but baby boy i know
i’ll be better than, her.

Gerudo Valley song cover

Monday, April 5th, 2010

Gerudo Valley cover with rhythm guitar, solo guitar, bass and rhythm beat. I accidently set the camera on mirrored in some clips, meaning I’m not left-handed if you wonder.
So the sound quality and the editing isn’t the best, but what do you think about my performance? Comment!

Jimi Hendrix – Valleys of Neptune

Friday, February 19th, 2010

Though there have been many posthumous releases from Jimi Hendrix’s archives since his tragic death, the recently-announced ‘Valleys of Neptune’ isn’t meant to be a “lost” album. Rather, it’s a look at the creative period in Hendrix’s life between the 1968 release of ‘Electric Ladyland’ and his legendary appearance at Woodstock the following summer.

“In the aftermath of ‘Electric Ladyland,’ he made a series of recordings with the original Experience,” co-producer, author and Experience Hendrix catalog director John McDermott tells Spinner. “When they effectively stopped working as a three-man recording unit, he brought in [bassist] Billy Cox — this album captures that transition. We don’t want to over-dramatize it. This is that missing period of time.”

The dozen tracks on ‘Valleys of Neptune’ reflect a time where Hendrix, finding his way with a new band while fighting contractual problems, was blossoming creatively. Featuring reworked hits like ‘Fire’ and ‘Red House’ as well as fully-realized songs that have never officially been released, the album shows that Hendrix was embarking in a new direction, one that would later be heard on ‘Band of Gypsys.’ While the album is due out on March 9, check out Spinner’s exclusive premiere of the title track below to hear what McDermott refers to as a “snapshot” into a part of Jimi’s life that’s rarely been heard.

Feis Ceoil RVIA – Bar session at the Rhine Valley Festival of Irish Music and Dance,

Friday, December 18th, 2009

Towards dawn, the bar session at the Rhine Valley Irish Association’s annual Feis Ceoil (Music Festival) thins out, leaving only the most hardened of drinkers, dancers, musicians and insomniacs. Here a shot from the early hours of the morning..
With classes begin at around 9:30 in the morning, you have to wonder at some people’s stamina. Classes finish at around 4pm, and there is a good break at mid-day. The whole festival takes place in a quiet, leafy holiday camp buried deep in the Voge mountains (Alsace) near Strassbourg. Though the teachers (all established names in Irish music and dance) are flown in from Ireland, most of the visitors know each other well from previous year’s ceoil and craic.
