It did not win, but here it is for your listening pleasure! It uses the text from Siegfried Sassoon’s poem “Invocation”, posted below. Thanks and congrats to Madison Greer ‘13 and Amy Tai ‘13 for doing a great job with it!

Invocation

Come down from heaven to meet me when my breath
Chokes, and through drumming shafts of stifling death
I stumble toward escape, to find the door
Opening on morn where I may breathe once more
Clear cock-crow airs across some valley dim
With whispering trees. While dawn along the rim
Of night’s horizon flows in lakes of fire,
Come down from heaven’s bright hill, my song’s desire.

Belov’d and faithful, teach my soul to wake
In glades deep-ranked with flowers that gleam and shake
And flock your paths with wonder. In your gaze
Show me the vanquished vigil of my days.
Mute in that golden silence hung with green,
Come down from heaven and bring me in your eyes
Remembrance of all beauty that has been,
And stillness from the pools of Paradise.

In the fields, cypress, vineyards and olive groves seem about to awaken after the long winter. I muse on the days that have rolled in ancient succession over this scene: winter in her tattered clothes, weary once again in her cold March striving. I imagine those who lived centuries before in this valley, and wonder how they felt when winter dragged her feet and heaved a melancholy sigh.

Part-3: The reenactment story is told through the “Every 15 Minutes” program held at Clayton Valley High School, California, USA. Video produced by Guava Films.

Producer’s Notes: Partially based on the true story from speaker/singer/songwriter Rich Latimer, who also makes a guest appearance in the video, followed by a live appearance at the Assembly as featured speaker before a standing-room-only audience in Clayton Valley’s gymnasium.

The soundtrack features several songs from Rich’s band (Very Unique Existence, from Byron Bay Australia), such as “Take It Easy”, “Roll On”, “Wonder Why” and “Shadow Behind”.

The live concert in the video, performing the song “Sofa King Pathetic”, features members of another band (Northern Lights, from Concord, CA). I say “members” because we swapped out the lead singer/guitarist and drummer with Clayton Valley living dead students Eric and Shane. Eric already sings & plays, but this was a first for Shane on drums….and he ROCKED!…….with a little video-editing help, that is Special thanks to Red House Studios in Walnut Creek for letting us shoot the concert scene on their sound stage.

I don’t want to give away the story line of the video, or how it fit perfectly with the speaker at the Student Assembly. Just check out all 3 parts of this video and you’ll get the concept. Truly another first for the E15M program! No crashing cars or car chases on this one – but enjoy it, maybe cry a bit, experience a very unique opportunity to shift, at gut-level, how you make decisions in life.

(Click THIS SENTENCE, or “MORE INFO” for song notes and LYRICS) — This is the final song on my Takoma Records debut album “One More Highway” (produced by John Fahey). Elsewhere on my You Tube channel ( http://www.youtube.com/user/randybrook77 )there are other songs from the album, and in the notes accompanying those songs I have already told about the album and how it came to be. Several of the fotos are from a 6-page Life Magazine article about my hitch-hiking exploits which was published shortly before the album was recorded.
-
This song called for a choir on the last verse, so we just gathered up everyone who was hanging around the sessions, including the sound engineer and his wife, and threw them all in front of a microphone. I was amazed at how well their performance turned out. They sound like the Mormon Tabernacle Choir or something.
-
True story – during recording I was thinking how nice a country-style slide guitar lead would sound. I went outside during a break and there was a guy sitting on the sidewalk playing a slide dobro (it was Hollywood, after all). I asked him to come in, and we gave him a few bucks to play on the recording. I think his music MAKES the song. Sadly, I lost his name and when it came time for credits I had to just call him “The Phantom Slide-Dobro Player”.
-
I have no idea why i used the gospel-standard “Will The Circle Be Unbroken” at the end, or why I jokingly said “Take it, Jesus” right before the verse began. At the time I did not believe in God, Jesus or the Bible – in fact I was an agnostic. A long time later I had some personal revelations – not unlike some of the imagery towards the end of the video – and they completely turned me around. Now I believe, but at the time I didn’t. Maybe the whole inspiration for the song was given to me by the God and His Son who I later came to embrace. Life is funny that way (No pun intended).
-
I’m not saying if that was Jesus or not who said “Easy” right after I said “Take it Jesus”, but if it was he has a better sense of humor than I gave him credit for. (Get it? “Take it , Jesus” – “Easy” – “Take it…easy”? Get it? Get it? SIgh…never mind.)
-
With this song I have now finished posting what I consider to be the best songs from the album, so there’s really no need for you to go out and buy it (I know…I know…it’s a good thing I told you…you were just about to rush out the door to go get a copy, right?). I have done myself out of any future sales royalties (It’s ok, I’m used to it. I never got a dime from all the previous sales anyway. Look up “chump” in the dictionary…you’ll see my picture next to it. Oh well…”That’s show biz”).
-
CAN YOU HEAR IT?
—————————-
Can you hear it?
Can you see it?
Do you know it to be real?
Can you touch it?
Can you taste it?
C’mon and tell me how you feel.
-
When the morning sun is breaking,
And a new day is coming in,
Lift your head, leave your sleeping,
Let me tell you where I’ve been.
-
To the valley,
Wet with wonder,
Watched a rolling river run.
You have been there,
In a vision,
Sitting golden in the sun.
-
BRIDGE – Well, I’ve been
Searching such a lonely time,
Please won’t you tell me?
-
Other faces,
Other places,
Know a softer side of you.
Can the ones,
Who touch you now,
Ever know what you’ve been through?
-
Leaving madness,
Mournful sadness,
Broken beauty – now unmasked,
Let the stillness,
Make its answer,
For the questions you have asked.
-
BRIDGE
-
Will the circle,
Be unbroken,
By and by, Lord, by and by.
There’s a better,
Home a’waitin’
In the sky, Lord, in the sky.
-

Yes, I’ve got various skins from things that I don’t even know where they came from. Maybe, if I’m lucky, I could sell some of these things like Christy Hengel did to earn a “new” Concertina! From what I understand, this is what he did as a very very young man to get a “new” and “better” concertina many years ago. Yes, music, accordians, harmonica’s, and concertina’s are almost everywhere. I’m even having a hard time getting into my bed. Sometimes, I wonder where I am? Heaven? It seems a little bit early, but if so, I hope I’m there. ON THE ONE#1, LET’S GO!! ” She told me she loved me, But oh how she lied, Oh how she lied, Oh how she lied, She told me she loved me, But oh how she lied, Oh how she lied to me; You are my Baby Doll, You are my Baby Doll, You are my Baby Doll, You’re my Sweetheart now; She told me she’d miss me, But oh how she lied, Oh how she lied, Oh how she lied, She told me she’d miss me, But oh how she lied, Oh how she lied to me; Don’t you leave me Baby Doll, Don’t you leave me Baby Doll, Don’t you leave me Baby Doll, You’re my Sweetheart now!!!!!!!!

The Sweet Cry Freedom was first staged in Antigua in 1993 and in spite of the rapid increase in similar events staged by other Caribbean Islands; the festival was firmly established as one of the premier music festivals in the region.

The Festival brought to Antigua many persons from near and far who were thrilled by the performances from some of the world’s best artists. Between 1993 and 1997 these renowned artists treated their fans to unforgettable performances: -

The Wailers; Arrow; Bankie Banx; Third World; Born Jamericans, Sanchez; Buju Banton; Beres Hammond; Lloyd Parks & We The People Band; David Rudder; Spice & Company; Square One; Kassav; Atlantic; Ronnie Mckintosh; Dean Fraser; Burning Flames; Wck; Mac Fingall; King Short Shirt; Swallow; Diana King; Nigel Lewis; Merciless & The Burning Flames.
The Festival had taken on a special significance with the presentation of the SWEET CRY FREEDOM AWARD. This award is dedicated to the memory of one of our past heroes whose life exemplifies the true meaning of freedom. In 1997, the award was dedicated to the memory of the Honorable Marcus Massiah Garvey and the recipients were Stevie Wonder, Osibisa and Sir Vivian Richards who were personally on hand to receive their awards. In 1996, the award was dedicated to the memory of Dr. Martin Luther King and the recipients were Gordon “Butch” Stewart, Rt. Honorable Vere Cornwall Bird and Heather Samuel. In 1995, the award was dedicated to the memory of Robert Nestor Marley and the recipients were Third World, David Rudder and Peggy Quattro.

An integral part of the 1997 festival was the Celebrity Event, which included such well-known African-American celebrities as:- VIVICA FOX; KENYA MOORE (former Miss USA); CATHERINE BRADLEY (from the Price is Right); CHARLES SMITH (former NBA great) and RONNIE LAWS (renowned Jazz musician). Also taking part in the activities that included beach volley ball, jet skiing among other things was Stevie Wonder. The entire event was recorded and formed a part of a ½ hour television special that was shown on BET to an audience in excess of 20 million viewers.

1997 was the last year that the festival was staged and planning is well advanced for “Sweet Cry Freedom ‘07″ to make a grand return on Saturday May 05, 2007 at the Antigua Recreation Grounds. The event was scheduled to coincide with the ending of the Annual Sailing Week activities and would climax 7 days of BEACH ACTIVITIES, SAILING and unbeatable excitement and fun. The Ministry of Tourism has officially endorsed the event and is the Presenting Sponsor of Sweet Cry Freedom ‘07.In addition to the concert itself, a Celebrity Weekend Event will be held. This event will take place from May 03rd — May 07th and will include a number of African-American celebrities. Both the concert and the celebrity event will be recorded for broadcast on US Cable Stations, Tempo and Caribbean Broadcast Union member stations.

The artist line for SCF 2007 is as follows:-

This year the CRY FREEDOM AWARD, dedicated to the memory of TOUSSAINT L’OUVERTURE, has been awarded to the following individuals:-

Earvin “Magic” Johnson — Presenter: Hon. Baldwin Spencer
Dr. Hillary Beckles — Presenter: TBA
A new feature this year will be the SWEET CRY MUSICAL TRIBUTE, which will pay respects to three great artists who passed away within the past 12 months. The artists to whom respect will be payed are as follows:
