Roof Ice build up in the valleys and eves I have porch all around my house with meat roof?
sorry about that it metal roof
what I have is the main roof and two room off the main roof like an X with four valleys the sun hits the dark green roof and melts and freeze on the way down and really builds up at the edges of the porchs
Its a new log house and well insulated and the pitchs are 8-12 and 6-12 and the porchs come out
i hope i explain it better.
As noted above me, you have ice dams building up. One thing you can do is install heat strips. It is a wire that runs down the valley and across the area where the ice is damming up. (This would be a spring time project,,,not now). The only draw back to heat strips is the cost of the electricity when using it. Not seriously high, but it will show in the bill and you never leave heat strips running for more than 45 minutes at a time. You can check with your local building supplies stores and see if this is feasible for your home. Best of luck and I hope this can be useful.

A meat roof? That’s different.
Not sure about the valleys, but if the ice build-up is on the edges of the roof, you have ice dams. Odd since you have that porch. The valleys should stay safe, they have underlayment that will protect you.

if your getting really bad ice dams you may want to have your ventilation system checked . if your roof doesnt have the need intake and exhaust vent then your roof doesnt have a even temp from the eave to ridge. all the heat rises and melts the snow and ice , but it re-freezes at the bottom. which is nit good.

Hey similar problems here in my area of Quebec. Pitched roof with three gables\dormers and its covered in metal. Ice dams near the gables\dormers. Short of a new roof, (say ten thousand or more) we get up there and clear away much of the snow a couple times a year. The roofs here have steep pitches and were all designed so that the snow slides right off. But with the sun getting hotter this time of year, ice dams on all the homes. Its a fact of life, doubt if there is much you can do about it.

If you have gutters or eave troughs one way of eliminating ice dams is to take calcium chloride and fill a nylon stocking with it….then place it in the gutter where the ice is forming. Make sure your drains are clear.
